I hope everyone had a Happy Holiday season! We are now in full swing in the classroom! We are geared up and focused to do our best on the CRCT exam.Reading/ELA

We will continue to work on verbs and verbs tense. We have an understanding of the different types of verbs and how they are used in past, future, and present tense. We will also be reviewing previous skills to keep everything fresh in our minds. While they are reading please make sure that you and the student are filling out their reading log information nightly. Students are expected to read 25 books by the end of the school year. Please make sure that you are asking them questions while they are reading to help them with their comprehension skills.

Writing:

We are preparing for the writing exam! We have now covered all the writing styles and we are working on making our writing more interesting to our readers. We are doing this by adding adverbs and adjectives. At home ask your students to be descriptive when talking, Play a game of “I Spy” with them. Let them describe and object so well you know exactly what they are talking about.

Math:

Students need to continue to work on math and division. We will continue to work on geometry. We are discussing circumference and volume. Please add mathematics into your activities at home. This can be done by having students help you measure when cooking, calculate the amount of time that has lapsed between coming home and before dinner.

Science:

We will continue to work the different types of landforms. Please let your children watch the news and see how landforms can change (i. e Earthquake in Haiti)

Beginning on Monday, October 19, 2009, all 5th grade students will reamain with thier homeroom teacher for all subjects.

The beginning of the school year has gone very well.

Reading/ELA

We will continue to work on character traits, parts of speech, and figurative language. Students should be reading nightly. While they are reading please make sure that you and the student are filling out their reading log information nightly. Students are expected to read 25 books by the end of the school year. Please make sure that you are asking them questions while they are reading to help them with their comprehension skills.

Writing:

We are working on narrative writing. Narrative writing is creating a story that can be used to write fiction and nonfiction essays. We will be working on supporting details and developing our character’s traits.

Math:

Students need to continue to work on multiplication and division. This week will begin working on fractions. Please continue to work with students in using math in everyday life. This can be done by having students help you measure when cooking, calculate the amount of time that has lapsed between school coming home and before dinner.

Social Studies:

We will begin discussing the Reconstruction Period and the importance of the Amendments.

Science:

We will continue to work on plant and animal cells this week.

Hello everyone, we are currently working on Cells. This unit is great because the kids are getting exposed to new science tools like the microscope and slides.

We will continue to work on the Civil War.

Remember to check your child’s agenda daily for homework and school activities.
